The Pacific Northwest is world renown for its proximity to abundant natural beauty as well as it's cultural attractions. However, tourists visiting the area need not venture only towards the city if looking for a community focused cultural event.

In Issaquah, Wash. the Downtown Issaquah Association presents the Issaquah Art Walk from Friday May 7th-Sept. 3rd. The event, founded in 2001, is held on the first Friday of every month. As a bonus, Issaquah is only approximately 15 miles away from the heart of Seattle. The Art Walk is a chance for community members to view local art and listen to local musicians all while perusing local shops and restaurants. So, what's the catch? There is none-the event is free.

Local Art Community

The region is known for its galleries, museums, antiques and cultural events. So, what's so special about Issaquah?

The town of Issaquah, despite its proximity to the Seattle metro area, is a community of approximately 26,000. The city is one of Western Washington's fasted growing communities, yet, was founded as a mining and logging village. Issaquah is well-known for its small-town feel while only minutes from technology giants like Microsoft or Nintendo and offering an abundance of outdoor activities year-round.

The Art Walk, however, caters towards both local communities and the surrounding art community. Elizabeth Short, faculty at Issaquah High School, explains "the Art Walk is not only a way to bring tourists in to the smaller community of Issaquah but also a way for our local art community to be seen on a larger scale." Short explains "little do people know, but Issaquah has a large art enclave that can be seen simply by driving down Front Street." Front Street, as Short described, serves as a main street in Issaquah and has multiple art galleries, boutiques and restaurants. Listen to more of my interview with Short here.

Andrea Lui, junior at Skyline High School in Issaquah, explains that she enjoys the Art Walk because it provides an outlet for local high school students, such as herself. Lui is enrolled in Kaleidoscope School of Music, also located on Front Street, and predominantly practices modern metal and punk music. The school, who is also well-known for offering the majority of musical talent in the seventh to 12th grade range, prides itself on being Issaquah's first comprehensive music school, conveniently located in downtown Issaquah. Artists Near and Far Take Part in Art Walk

Renée Robbins Pound and Lenoard Whitfield, owners of local Art by Fire Gallery and Glass School located on Issaquah's Front Street, explain that Art Walk draws showcases of both local artists as well as artists from around the Pacific Northwest. "Work from our own studio is showcased throughout the United States, so, it appears that more and more artists are following that same trend," states Robbins Pound. Art by Fire also offers mini-workshops in the art of glassblowing, flameworking and casting. The studio gallery strives to "help students achieve their own goals-whether they're looking for a hobby or life-changing career."

Artist Betsy Dahlstrom practices watercolor painting as both a hobby and a career. After raising her family full-time in Georgia, Dahlstrom relocated to Issaquah to become a painter full-time. Although Dahlstrom acknowledges Issaquah's art community is still growing, she explains that it is a "perfect place to foster creativity." Dahlstrom resides in the foothills outside of town, nicknamed the "Issaquah Alps", and explains she finds inspiration right outside her front door. She considers the region one of her favorite locations as water is a major theme throughout the majority of her work. Listen to the rest of my interview with Dahlstrom here.

Art Community Growth

ArtEAST, a collective formed by the former Art Collective of Issaquah and the Downtown Issaquah Association, serves to launch the Art Walk every year and guarantee "an artistic spectacle that is sure to catch the eye." In the past, the organization has served as a promoter of the Art Walk, solidifying the popular event it is today. When the Art Walk began in 2001, artEAST explains only one art gallery lined the Front Street. Currently, downtown Issaquah boasts five art galleries, five music instruction schools, a glass blowing studio and many other businesses that serve as part-time galleries.

During the event, downtown Issaquah transforms restaurants, hair salons and bookstores alike into modern art galleries. For example, even the lobby of the coveted Village Theatre is transformed with displays of local artists if performances are not scheduled. As the success of Art Walk only increases every year, the event is sure to garner more and more regional attention from both artists and art enthusiasts of the Pacific Northwest well into the future.

A Sunshine Filled Weekend for the PNW

The rain has (mostly) faded into the mist as the sun sets its sights in the Pacific Northwest. Here's a look at what's happening around the region.

-Gamers rejoice. This weekend at the Seattle Center, the Pokémon Regional Video Game Championship will draw in upwards of 500 Pokémon enthusiasts. The Nintendo game, created in 1998, is the company's second most-popular game. Winners of the tournament will move on to national and world championships in late 2010.

-Interested in experiencing the boating culture of the PNW but don't own a boat? No problem. The Center for Wooden Boats is hosting a free public sail on Sunday May 9th. The center's Cast Off! program allows visitors to get an insider's look at sailing in classic boats. To reserve a spot, stop by the center at 10 a.m. on the day of sail.

Opening Day of Boating Season Attracts Boaters and Tourists Alike

Each year, opening day of boating season draws crowds from around the region to frolic on the abundance of nearby bodies of water. Opening day, held on the first Saturday in May since 1920, is a virtual holiday for boat-owners and boat-enthusiasts alike. If you don't own a boat (or someone who does), don't fret. Crowds seem to gravitate towards downtown Seattle to take a ferry tour around the Puget Sound, check out Pike Place Market, or watch the boats slowly but surely drift further from the coast. Suprisingly Spring-like

-April 24th marked the opening day for fishing on Washington State's seasonal lakes. However, anglers beware: the Department of Fish and Wildlife is ensuring all fisherman have fishing licenses. Fishing license fees can be found here. The fees from fishing licenses fund the cost of growing fish in hatcheries, such as the Carson National Fish Hatchery. This hatchery attracts visitors year round.

-On Monday, April 26th, Neil Innes, a musical-comedic act for almost 50 years, will perform at the Triple Door in Seattle. Innes, known worldwide for John Lennon Beatle's parodies, also has associations with other bands throughout the 1960s, such as the Bonzo Doo-Dah Dog Band. Read more about Innes here.

PIKE PLACE MARKET:

Pike Place Market is a sightseer’s paradise. Located on Seattle’s waterfront, more than 600 vendors can be found within a cluster of culture, cuisine and art. World famous for the original Starbucks, the market also features an integral part of Seattle’s cultural reputation as being a seaside port: a fish market. The Pike Place Fish Market is a tourist attraction similar to a right of passage as employees toss all types and all sizes of fish over the heads of unsuspecting tourists. The catch? Often times, an individual amongst the crowd must first purchase the fish to cue the show. However, the fish market conveniently offers airline-approved packaging for out of town visitors wishing to showcase their finds to friends back home.

Be sure to also stop in to Le Panier (a traditional French Bakery) and Piroshky Piroshky, a cult favorite serving Russian filled pastries. The market also always has an abundance of fresh cut flowers available for purchase. Although the flowers are always a visual delight, tulips are widely available after the Skagit Valley Tulip Festival throughout the month of April.

CANNON BEACH, OREGON:

Cannon Beach is a popular destination for visitors looking for unparalleled scenery as well as a unique art colony set amongst the Pacific Ocean. The city, originally named Ecola, was renamed after the nearby sinking of the U.S. Survey ship named “The Shark” and the discovery of the ships cannon on the beach in 1846.

As a hot spot for photographers and artists, Cannon Beach supports a growing art community. This artistic influence is evident throughout the many quaint bed and breakfasts and dining options throughout the city.

Cannon Beach is also world-famous for the rock monoliths directly West of Cannon Beach. These massive rock structures, including 235 ft. Haystack Rock, are just a few reasons why Cannon Beach is the most photographed natural sight in Oregon.

SAN JUAN ISLANDS, WASHINGTON:

The San Juan Islands are more than 170 islands that are in the San Juan Archipelago off the Western coast of Washington state. The islands, including the most popular tourist junctions of Lopez Island, Orcas Island, Shaw Island and Friday Harbor, serve as a getaway destination for many visitors wishing to hike, kayak, sightsee and more.

The islands are served by the Washington State Ferry System and are accessible via ferry terminals in Vancouver, BC or Anacortes, Wash. An additional 40 islands are also inhabited, however, private transportation must be arranged.

The islands are most popular for their abundance of wildlife. Approximately 90 Orca whales call the islands home year-round along with other marine life such as sea lions and seals. Consequently, the San Juan Wildlife Refuge protects 83 of the islands.

WHISTLER, BRITISH COLUMBIA, CANADA:

Whistler, BC is known as a snow lover’s paradise. Yet, the city of Whistler has adrenaline inducing activities to offer even the most seasoned outdoorsmen satisfaction year-round.

Located 75 miles north of Vancouver, BC, the town of Whistler is located at the base of Whistler Mountain and was most recently featured worldwide as a key site for the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics.

Whistler, named for the whistle of marmots that roam around the mountain, also offers an abundance of international cuisine options including Japanese, French, Italian and American dishes just to name a few.

Whistler is also popular for its availability of luxury accommodations throughout the area so that visitors can stay, and play, in style.

MOUNT ST. HELENS, GIFFORD PINCHOT NATIONAL FOREST, WASHINGTON:

Mount St. Helens is an active volcano located in the Gifford Pinochot National Forest in Washington State. Most famous for its eruption that greatly impacted nearby communities and wildlife in 1980, the area became a National Volcano Monument in 1982.

The 110,000-acre area is now used predominantly for recreation and research. Visitors to the monument are now able to camp, hike and more while observing the approximate 230 square miles directly affected by the eruption in 1980.

Mount St. Helens even offers helicopter tours that allow visitors to see the crater up close and personal. That is, if your wits can handle it.

The Seattle Mariners

In the Pacific Northwest, the Seattle Mariners are a force to be reckoned with. As the regions only Major League Baseball team, fans flock from surrounding areas to support a team that, statistically, falls below fan expectations.

Does the Mariners lower than average performance deter fans? Not in the least.

Season ticket holder, Caytie Talbert, 22, says "as one of five Major League Baseball teams with a stadium that has a retractable roof, Mariners fans care less what the weather’s like outside-that won’t keep fans away." Talbert's spirit is shared among other followers, laughing as she says "I guess that does mean we can’t blame losing streaks on the rain."

The Seattle Mariners have called Seattle home since 1977 and are members of the Western Division of of Major League Baseball's American League. Despite the success of winning the American League division series in 1995, the Mariners have never played in a World Series. For a franchise surrounded by fan frenzy, what makes the Mariners so great?

"To me, the Mariners are a way of life in the Northwest," says Talbert. "I feel like the Mariners represent Seattle in such a strong and positive way that translates to loyalty and dedication to your roots throughout the major league.”

After the demolition of the Kingdome in 1999, the Mariners welcomed their new home, Safeco Field, with open arms. Along with from offering much needed improvements, the construction of Safeco virtually saved baseball in the region by creating a long-term home for baseball in the region.

Aside from picturesque views of the Puget Sound, many Mariners fans flock to opening day as a show of support for their loyal team. This year's home opener on April 12 welcomed a sellout crowd of 45,876 faithful fans, eager to start anew as a whole.

“I think what I like most about going to Mariners games is the sense of community," says Talbert. "It's not every day you see Randy Johnson, a hero in the eyes of Mariners fans, return to throw the ceremonial first pitch."

Central Washington University student Ross Young, 20, agrees with Talbert. "I love the Mariners. Mariners fans seem to be part of a large community," says Young. "When you see a person with a Mariners hat on, it almost gives you authority to start up a casual conversation and potentially make a new friend."

The Seattle Mariners should consider themselves one of the luckiest baseball franchises in the nation. "I love going to the games at Safeco and feeling the energy and excitement all around the stadium," says Young.

Despite being the only Major League Baseball team in the region, the loyal Mariners fans continue to support their beloved team, rain or shine, win or lose. The Seattle Mariners baseball franchise will clearly last long into the future.

A Rainy Day Type of Week

-In Seattle, Wash., the annual Multiple Sclerosis walk took place on Sunday morning. The walk, benefiting programs and services for people who are suffering from MS and their families, research, prevention and more. Thousands of residents took place in the walk, looping around Husky Stadium. The walk attracted individuals from throughout the region in order to attend a weekend full of events.

-Also in Seattle, The Seattle Mariners begin their season on April 12th at Safeco Field. As the first regular-season game, fans are coming in droves to watch the regions only Major League Baseball team. The Mariners face off against the Oakland Athletics with a sellout crowd expected.

-In Vancouver, B.C., Canada, Vancouver Fashion Week started with a bang. A gala was held on April 7th at Empire Landmark Hotel to celebrate the event's tenth season. The event attracted fashionistas and designers alike from London, Montreal and local designers from the Vancouver area.

-Sadly, the city of Vancouver also experienced a great loss this week. The iconic neon sign of The Only Sea Foods restaurant featuring a seahorse was taken down this week after more than 50 years. Yet, the sign is being stored by the Portland Hotel Society which hopes to restore the sign and maybe even re-open the restaurant in a new location in the future. The restaurant was previously Vancouver's longest surviving restaurant in the same location.

Savor Seattle Food Gourmet Food Tour

Today, I took part in the Savor Seattle Gourmet Food Tour. Ranked number one attraction and food tour in the Seattle, I wanted to experience this slice of decadence for myself.

Savor Seattle offers a variety of tours and special events, yet, the gourmet food tour caught my interest out because Seattle is known as a cultural hot spot and, within that culture includes the food subculture. Sunset Magazine describes the experience as "blazing a gourmet trail" within the 3 hour tour.

The tour begins at the Mayflower Park Hotel, serving the Seattle area for over 80 years of "grandness" and features a total of seven stops at gourmet locations along the way including: Andaluca Restaurant, Serious Pie, Il Bistro, Creminell i Meats, Pike Brewing Company, ART Restaurant, and Gelatiamo.

Regardless of the tour's sixty dollar price tag, visitors of Seattle and natives alike will surely be able to savor something new and exciting among the offered tours. Not to mention, however, a full stomach and a cultured mind.

The Return of the Sun

Spring has sprung in the Pacific Northwest and here’s what’s going on around the region for weekenders and outdoor buffs alike.

-Recently, a hotel in Tacoma, Wash. received praise for being amongst the world’s best art hotels. Hotel Murano features numerous vibrant art pieces that resemble the makings of an art gallery, rather than a hotel. The hotel, which features numerous amenities that certainly helped the hotel to be voted one of the top 10 best hotels in the nation by Conde Nast, even boasts its own curator.

-The first phase of construction is now completed at Duthie Hill Mountain Bike Park. While the 120-acre park on the Sammamish Plateau between Sammamish, Wash. and Fall City, Wash. will not hold its grand opening until May 22nd, riders can now experience 90 percent of the park's phase one trails. The park is now a reality through a partnership through King County Parks, the park owner, and Seattle-based Evergreen Mountain Bike Alliance, who is helping to build and maintain the grounds.

How do I become a yoga instructor?

In reference to "Calling All Yogis", readers voiced their interest on how to become a yoga teacher. Because being a yoga teacher is typically a second job, or additional source of income, reader Kayla Emmons was curious what type of requirements are used to become a certified instructor. "In Boulder, Colo., yoga is everywhere; yoga outfitter prAna is even based here," she explains. "How difficult is it to become certified enough to get contracted by a studio?"

Instructors who have a strong class base, and are consequently contracted by numerous studios, usually have a great deal of training and experience hours. Like instructor Regan Pasko, instructors build a following of clients after completing different certification programs per each studios specific requirements.

Yoga Alliance, a program that registers individual yoga teachers and yoga teacher training programs (yoga schools), promotes training standards through programs of at least 200 or 500 hours in length. A registry of yoga schools is also available for prospective students to view local schools who participate with the Yoga Alliance. This registry is also available to the general public, organizations that employ yoga instructors and organizations reviewing yoga instructor credentials.

So, how do you build a following? Reader Tiffany Nix was curious how instructors stand out in the booming yoga industry. Many instructors, like Pasko, build an online profile that offer experience details, course schedule, rate information, reviews and contact information. Also, other instructors choose to build entire websites catered towards their yoga practice or following. Here are four tips for increasing a client base.

Spring has sprung

And so have the travel discounts. This Spring, big ships departing from Seattle and other Northwest hubs are offering deeply discounted travel to Vancouver, British Columbia. Cruises through Holland America that normally cost approximately $900/person in peak seasons start at $39/day from May through September. There are also other cruises that cater to both the Northwest and the entire Pacific coast.

In other news...

In Seattle, the Museum of Flight is taking a gamble in the fight towards displaying one of NASA's soon to be retired Space Shuttle. The Museum is planning to build a $12 million dollar facility to house the shuttle, even though the facilities are unable to guarantee placement of one of three available shuttles. Technically, to be considered for displaying the shuttle, the facilities must already be constructed. If they build it, will they come? We'll see come July 2011.

Coffee drinkers, rejoice! Travelers throughout the region will be delighted by a new study that finds moderate consumption of caffeinated coffee may actually have a positive effect on your heart. Five of the ten areas with the most stores per 10,000 people are in the Pacific Northwest, including the Seattle-Bellevue-Everett metro area ranking 2.5 coffee shops per 10,000 people.

Calling All Yogis

As yoga studios continue to pop up on every corner, in nearly all locations, many yogis are being drawn to the Pacific Northwest for its easy access to nature and the great outdoors, even while inside. Throughout the region known for birthing many different technological innovations, yoga has become a way of life. In King County, Washington, which includes the city of Seattle, an estimated one in seven adults have actively participated in a yoga or pilates class within the last year. In Seattle, that number surpasses those surveyed that ski, snowboard or sail. Women, yoga studios most dominant demographic, participate in yoga at a 1:5 ratio. Nationwide, 15.8 million people are participating in yoga classes. However, 15 years ago, practicing yoga was a foreign concept. The practice of mental and physical disciplines originating in India have surely gained popularity, uniting body, soul and mind. There are different types of yoga for all ability levels including prenatal yoga, hot yoga and even yoga for people who don't like yoga. So, why is yoga becoming a mainstream influence in the Pacific Northwest?

Why the Pacific Northwest
In a region hardly disconnected from the hustle and bustle of the technology craze, why is yoga, a calculated and methodical practice, so popular? If anything, regional giants such as Microsoft, Amazon, Nintendo or Boeing supply much of the world with innovation, yet, sometimes at a stress-inducing cost. In demanding fields within a demanding regional sector, competition has its price. Tracy Weber was not your typical yoga student. A former manager at Microsoft, headquartered in nearby Redmond, Wash., she explained to The Seattle Times that the culture at Microsoft included a lot of "table-pounding." After trying yoga to remedy pain from a car-accident, Weber found that instead of relieving her back pain, it relieved so much stress that "she kept going anyway." Yet, if publicized as more of a form of meditation or philosophy, Weber would have had no interest. She eventually found a class that helped her back and her stress. Therefore, she explained, no longer felt the need to pound. Kayla Swanton, a student-teacher, also uses yoga to de-stress. "After a long day surrounded by middle schoolers, there is nothing better than yoga," said Swanton. "It gives me the "me-time" I so desperately need after giving my all day in and day out- not many other things can accomplish the same freeing feeling that you can't get from watching TV or sleeping."

Yoga escapes are also available throughout the region. Similar to the nostalgic feeling of a Caribbean vacation, Yoga Escapes Northwest offers group getaways focused around yoga in the tranquil and "soul-satisfying" beauty of the Pacific Northwest. Each retreat package offers a diverse selection of classes that will satisfy yoga lovers of all levels of experience including guided inquiry meditation, an assortment of yoga courses as well as outdoor activities. The goal of Yoga Escapes Northwest is to combine "the opulence found at extravagant Resort vacation settings with the healing, peace and serenity of a Yoga Retreat Center." For this mission, Yoga Escapes Northwest offers escape settings that are "truly restorative, relaxing, rejuvenating and almost literally in your backyard." Through other outlets, there are also numerous yoga vacations available, advertising "re-creation, extending the peace, serenity and sense of well-being you feel after yoga class." Not only available in the Northwest, such travels are available from a number of worldwide outlets.

History of Yoga in the Region

In 1969, the first person put yoga under the letter "Y" in the Seattle Yellow Pages. Marie Svoboda, believed to be the ad-placer, was one of the first to pioneer yoga instruction in the region. Initially, her students were, for the majority, hippies in classes that included no frills. Yet, she eventually catered to clientele much different than hippies, including Nobel-Prize winners and famous performers. Flash-forward to 2003 in which the first-annual Northwest Yoga Festival took place. During it's inaugural four-day run, nearly 600 people attended the festival at the Seattle Center featuring classes in different styles and traditions, panel discussions, keynote speeches and more. However, each day of approximately six hours of classes costs approximately $165, with slightly discounted rates if attendees sign up for the following days. The following year, approximately 100 more people were in attendance. "I've never been to a yoga festival," explains Kayla Emmons, a regular at CorePower Yoga. "But, if I ever had the chance to learn from the best, you have my word I'd be there." Yoga's popularity certainly has staying power, yet, with so many studios and so many types of yoga to choose from, how do you choose the perfect place to practice?

Yoga Today

Yoga Instructor Regan Pasko has been teaching yoga for about two and a half years. As a full-time mechanical engineer, he was initially attracted to yoga through his own dedicated practice and, by doing so, felt an amazing amount of joy that he wanted to be able to share with others. Pasko soon found that he "could achieve fantastic feats through a dedicated practice bringing an enormous amount of self respect and confidence...[and wanted] others to find this too." A believer in the idea that one must feel the asana (pose) before one can teach it, he teaches classes downtown Issaquah, Mercer Island and Seattle proper. He teaches at numerous locations because the majority of yoga studios hire teachers as contractors. "In the Seattle area, I have found that most people initially get involved with yoga for physical fitness, another form of a workout or for cross training (becoming more flexible for other pursuits)," explained Pasko. "Once they are in and hooked they stay with it for any number of reasons: less stress, feeling good physically, feeling good mentally, pride, attention, feeling of accomplishment, personal growth, a community of like minded people...it goes on and on."

Pasko believes that the Pacific Northwest is "a thriving community giving local students many opportunities and varieties to choose from." While his predominant demographic is all over the map, yet dominated by 30-45 year old physically fit women, he has found that "the amount of studios and students keeps growing & growing with weekend immersion workshops, workshops in the islands and special master teacher guests." Pasko is certain "something big is going on here since all the national Master teachers find their way here every other year or so for mini-retreats." He regularly receives invitations via Facebook and other social networking sites to retreats that are offered throughout the islands off the Puget Sound. Many of these retreats come equipped with local space for instructors to use. However, retreats are also hosted off-site, in warmer locales like Mexico or Central America, during the winter months by both local and international organizations. "Just simply Google 'yoga retreat' and you will be amazed," explains Pasko.

Pasko, who's classes are taught at a high level in which the more advanced asanas are explored, does not have a definitive style in terms of which type of yoga is taught. "My practice grew through a vinyasa power yoga, thus that would be my foundation but I'm influenced by Ashtanga, simple Power and the Forrest style of yoga of building & opening the body to achieve a peak pose," said Pasko. Yet, the openness and welcoming attitude of all yoga enthusiasts is just as evident. "My classes are challenging both in strength & skill, but are accessible to everyone, nobody is excluded," he explained. "I bring to my classes an aspect of fun. If your not having fun, then its work & who wants to be working?".

Is sustainable tourism possible?

Recently, production of consumer-based products such as cars, kitchen appliances and even entire houses have focused around sustainability. TV commercials advertise "green" household cleaners or the latest gas efficient car model. What else can be classified as sustainable?

Tourism. John Francis, National Geographic's vice president for Research, Conservation and Exploration, is currently popularizing a Geotourism Mapguide that highlights sustainable places and attractions in the Central Cascades region in the Pacific Northwest.

The MapGuide will direct visitors to more than more than 200 geotourism sites around the region. These sites were initially suggested by over 1,200 nominations from local residents and then selected by the National Geographic Society and other regional committees.

Francis, explains that "In defining this region by what its residents most treasure, you have made great strides toward ensuring its geographical character for future generations." The project, which took 2 years to complete, was a "tremendous achievement," said Francis. "Many people have worked for years to create this special map, and their work, and the result of it, is a testament to the pioneer spirit that is characteristic of the region."

Francis promotes geotourism as a more holistic approach to tourism because it enhances the values of the place. Having attended the University of Washington for his Bachelors degree, Francis explains that this project would have been impossible without "strong stewardship across the region and the support of government agencies, regional tourism groups, tribal groups, and many others."

Aside from serving as the Vice President of Research, Conservation and Exploration for National Geographic, Francis is also a key member of other environmental related organizations such as the Commission for Education and Communications for the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), the U.S. National Park System Advisory Board and the U.S. National Commission for the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).

Francis believes that "“tourism is the engine for conservation, and geotourism connects travelers with places."

The National Geographic Society recently unveiled a Geotourism MapGuide that showcases the Pacific Northwest's Central Cascades region. The MapGuide, which features over 200 geotourism sites selected by the National Geographic Society and regional committees, will allow a visitor to gain "a sense of the Central Cascades area as unique to any other place on Earth".
Olympic National Park, near the Pacific coast of Washington, is hoping to expand. The increase would allocate the 240 additional acres to heighten protection of the sockeye salmon habitat in the area. The park already offers an array of activities and attractions including two temperate rainforest's in the continental U.S., Hoh Rainforest and Quinault Rainforest.

Washington State Boom (or bust) in Tourism from Olympics

As travelers head north up I-5 towards the 2010 Winter Olympic games in Vancouver, many business owners are hoping for a boost in tourism due to the increase in traffic along the Northern corridor.

Yet, the Puget Sound Business Journal has found that such an increase might not be realistic. Amy Spain, member of the Snohomish County Tourism Bureau, has experienced minimal increases. Spain estimates only 300 extra cars/day will travel I-5 for the duration of the Olympics.

Although the area was hoping to see visitors in upwards of 250,000, future tourism may be impacted instead. Various business owners believe that the seed will be planted in the hearts of the Olympic tourists to return to the area in the future.

In the town of Bellingham, Wash., an hour outside of Vancouver, BC, Western Washington University (WWU) student Julia Tingstad disagrees with Spain. "In Bellingham, there is definitely more hype about the Olympics. The restaurants are busier than normal this time of year with families driving North to catch an event," said Tingstad. "I work at coffee shop downtown and we see a surge of new faces hitting the road, especially on weekends." Tingstad, a sophomore at WWU, explains that there is usually a boost in winter activity due to Mt. Baker, a premiere ski/snowboard destination, in nearby Glacier. However, she explains that this year "it's much more diverse."

Despite the lack of tourism, excitement is still buzzing around the Pacific Northwest. "It's different to be so close to the Olympics," said Tingstad. "I'm glad it's showcasing the beauty of what's right in our backyard."

Olympic Fever

As the countdown to the 2010 Winter Olympic games in Vancouver reaches single digits, the anticipation of travelers and news outlets grows stronger by the minute. Despite the nearing rush towards the epicenter of the games continues, there are still many opportunities to see the rest of British Columbia, outside the Olympic bubble that is.

In nearby Whistler, BC, Talking Totem Tours offers an in-depth Sea-to-Sky Aboriginal Cultural Journey that includes pick-up and drop-off from downtown Vancouver. Tours run from February 12th-28th.
Aside from the mainstream Olympic Games, check out the Richmond Olympic Oval for total coverage of all long-track speed skating events. Because the Richmond facility is only hosting this event, Vancouver hustle and bustle will seem worlds away.
Finally, learn a bit more about Vancouver itself. From February 11th-27th, Vancouver House provides information on the cities leading green-initiatives and its environmental history.

Who golfs in the rain?

Apparently a lot of people. The Golf Club at Newcastle in Newcastle, Wash. is among the "Top Clubs in Service" in North America and its grounds boast two 18-hole public golf courses surrounding the 44,000 square-foot clubhouse.

Although tee-times certainly dwindle during the rain-soaked winter days, Newcastle is open to patrons with the exception of visible frost or snow. If you aren't much of a golfer, enjoy a meal at the award winning Calcutta Grill or happy hour and billiards at the Wooly Toad.

Set Forth, Weary Traveler

The Pacific Northwest region is comprised of Oregon, Washington and the Canadian province of British Columbia that is home to approximately 7 million people. Because of the region's affinity for outdoor sports, music and cuisine, it's also a popular tourism destination.

Despite the winter rain, many enjoyable regional events take place this month.

In Vancouver, BC, the 2010 Winter Olympic Games begin on February 16th. Aside from the main event action, here is a list of other nearby attractions once Olympic fever has run dry.
Fremont, an enclave of Seattle, hosts a farmers market on Sunday's throughout the year. Boasting locally grown fruits and vegetables, fresh soups and more, visit their official blog for directions, nearby attractions and even a sneak peak at the line-up.
Or, if feeling a bit sluggish after visiting the farmers market, head north to North America's largest public tea exhibition. The 4th annual Victoria Tea Festival is held in British Columbia's Crystal Garden. More information on the venue once popular for extravagant tea parties in a tea-loving city as well as the festival itself can be found here.

Greetings!

My name is Amber Kavanaugh and I am eager and excited to learn about the world of Online Writing and Information throughout this semester.

I am a senior at Colorado State University seeking a Bachelors Degree in Liberal Arts. However, I live in Issaquah, Wash. Do I commute the 1,200 some miles every day? Hardly. I am part of the small population of students that choose to take course primarily in an online setting. After deciding to move to Washington, I was thankful that Colorado State offers such programs as the Liberal Arts Distance Degree so that I was able to complete my college education. Beforehand, I attended CSU as a regular instruction student majoring in technical journalism.

Prior to college, I attended Grandview High School in Aurora, Colo. It is there that my passion for journalism truly developed. I served on the yearbook staff for three out of four years and assumed the role of chief photographer my senior year. However, the highlight of my high school journalism career was in 2005 when my high school newspaper and yearbook staffs’ traveled to New York City for the Columbia Scholastic Press Association Convention. It helped me realize that my dream of writing for a magazine was not only obtainable but reachable with dedication, hard work and practice.

Yet, after relocating to the Pacific Northwest, I made it my personal mission to explore all the area has to offer in terms of landmarks, attractions, tourism and more. When moving to a new location, I believe it is important to become knowledgeable about your surroundings as to be proud of where you live.

Therefore, I will be using this blog space over the course of the semester to highlight key events, lodging and activities that encompass the Pacific Northwest. Also, I am excited and encouraged about the increase in tourism to the Seattle area for the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics.

By covering tourism and events in the area, I believe the area will garnish the attention it deserves for being a beautiful and natural travel destination in the United States.
